Jun 28, 2013 I have been using AppGeeker for a long time and it can convert almost anything to anything (in batch as well). Audio or video. Got if for one specific thing, but now use it almost daily for a variety of conversions.
Personally, I have made good experiences with the AppGeeker Video Converter for converting MTS files. Same thing happened to me Jen. I was getting 'wrong codec' or some biz and gave up on the AVI. What i did do to counteract it, (as suggested by our JJJ:thumbsup:) was to make an image sequence of the AVI movie, and stack those images. It might be a tad more work but at least i got a result. I used VideoPad Video Editor to create the image sequence, then AVISTACK 2 to stack the images with varying results. From my experience, Registax v 5.1 was better to do the Wavelet sharpening with. V6 keeps crashing:rolleyes.

Jen, I Jen-erally (hee hee. Attempted pun) agree with Steve there.
Virtual Dub does well at conversion. And Registax 6 does seem to crash a bit. I have been using AVIStack like him, and at first the wavelet processing didnt seem to work as well as Registax 6. But after working on it for ages, and getting used to the differences, I think the wavelets work just as well in either.

But Jen, it's far easier to capture the AVI's rather than convert from MOV's. I use BackyardEOS for this, but there are plenty of options. Does require your camera to be hooked up to a laptop however. So if you want to just record into the camera, then you need to keep recording MOV's and convert them with VirtualDub. It stands for Audio Video Interleave and is a common video file format. But as Jen has found out not all AVIs are the same AVIs, there are actually lots of different ways of saving the video stream within that format.
I gave myself several headaches trying to understand while writing the video occultation manual for the RASNZ Occ.
Unless you really like the tech stuff you might be wandering into dangerous territory there. On the other hand, VDub is a great bit of freeware! I hope that works for you, Jen. Ahhh, the dreaded codec problems! So, here's how it works. Your camera records video in the.MOV format.

When you convert this to an AVI format, what you are really doing is changing the format (or 'container'), but not the underlying codec (in this case H264). To put it another way, AVI is a container for video files, which can be recorded using various codecs, eg Mpeg1, Mpeg2, H263, H264 and others. So when you convert from.MOV to.AVI you need to ensure that you are actually re-encoding (also called transcoding) the file using one of the codecs that Registax understands - which if I remember correctly is Mpeg1 or (preferably) Mpeg2.
